Assignment: Analysing images from news stories

Writer's picture: Jane ByrneJane Byrne

For this assignment I looked at the news source, The Atlantic. They released their 'photos of the week' from January 29th 2021. I choose this article because the photos were striking and demonstrated the different camera settings and editing that we discussed in class. The photos are very different in nature and show the fragility of life right now and the juxtaposition of people in ICU wards dying of COVID-19 paired with golfers competing in Dubai all within a weeks work.

Caption: A nurse takes care of a patient infected with COVID-19, on January 25, 2021, in the intensive-care unit of Lyon-Sud hospital in Pierre-Benite. Stubbornly high new rates for infections, hospitalizations, and deaths have fueled fears that France may need another full lockdown, which would be its third, inflicting yet more devastation on businesses and daily lives.

I chose this photo due to its dark and striking nature. I feel like if the pandemic had to be represented by one imagine it would be this one. The spotlight on the nurse is very eery and brings the viewer's eye directly into the centre of the photo highlighting the PPE equipment and the sombre vital signs machine. I would say this image had a lower aperture as it is a low-light scenario. The image of course could have been shot using natural daylight but I think the photographer chose to shoot in a darker setting to convey the darkness of the image subject. A lower aperture is also good for creating a nice depth of field in an image. Because aperture controls how much light is entertaining the lens, it will also have an effect on shutter speed. The shutter doesn't need to stay open as long to make a correct exposure which translates into a faster shutter speed. The patients legs shown in the photo again shows the severity and devastating nature of the virus.

I chose this image mainly because of how different it was from the first one. There is a lot of natural light and it is bright and striking. The background of the image - scenery of Dubai is blurry and therefore suggests a wide aperture or the smallest f value on the camera was used. Casey is the forefront of the image however the magnificent Dubai skyline is the background showing depth and levels to the image.

This image stood out to me because it represented the frames of composition of photography that we discussed in week one of the module. The rules of thirds was used in this image across the centre. This allows the viewers eye to be drawn to the healthcare workers carrying a body lost to the virus - the subject of the image. Leading lines is also incorporated here by the gravestones. My eye is able to look past the subject of the image and follow the gravestones all the down to the very back of the cemetery.

I chose this image just to show the importance and effect of a high shutter speed. Typically, this one this would be a shutter speed of 1/1000 or faster to get this effect.
