This week we started off the class by going through any questions we had or problems we had encountered over the past week. It was here I asked my question on how to see and display the lightroom editing changes I had made so I could put them clearly under my photos going forward. Other questions asked were how to navigate the drop down menu and how to apply a slider to demonstrate the work you've done in lightroom. Unfortunately WIX does not offer this so I have just been displaying the images beside each other to achieve the before and after look.
We then went on to look at DAM - which is Digital Asset Management. Conor discussed the process from taking a photo, to edit, to successfully backing up. We also learnt the difference between raw and JPEG. JPEG's discard data in order to create a smaller file size while raw files preserve all of that data. If you are shooting something really important you might choose to shoot and edit in raw so you have more data to work with.
Conor stressed the importance of backing up your images and files on two SD cards if possible and if your camera allows and then organise them accordingly e.g. by date or job description on your computer. Successfully backing up your images is extremely important for journalists like myself because at times I will be working on different or many projects at the same time and being organised and knowing where all my images are is extremely important for my work.
We learnt how to distribute the edited photos by exporting, uploading to an ICloud or similar service and to back the images up again. Usually you will export a full resolution version of your image for your own archive and then usually one at 1800/1920 resolution for a website or online media, After that, it's important we upload and save our images to a ICloud and then finally to back them up for a last time. I didn't realise how much work when into a photo after initially editing it. I can see now the importance of backing up your photos and the difference between JPEG and raw.
We then had a workshop in lightroom. We learnt how to put captions, copyright your images, view camera settings and how to copy the metadata from one image to all of your images. This tool were very helpful and I know it will save me time when I'm editing my photos in future.
The last thing we did was look at our new assignment. This is assignment two and it is worth 12.5% of our finale grade. It is a three picture profile of a student with one image for a blog or Linkedin. The images should be accompanied with a 100 word profile written in the third person.
