This week, we went through any questions we had and recapped all the tools we had discussed in the previous week. Then we looked at The Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI).
The Press Photographers Association of Ireland, the PPAI, is a not-for-profit, volunteer-lead organisation with a membership drawn from across Ireland's four provinces.
The Association is dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary work produced by its members, comprising the country's finest exponents of their craft, and to promoting the role of the press photographer in building the nation's visual historical record. (PPAI).
Each year, the PPAI hosts awards. They are now in their 43rd year of award giving. The purpose of the awards is to showcase and reflect the great photography taken throughout the year. This year marked a truly momentous year in the history of the State - the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conor asked us all to choose one of the images from the awards and be prepared to talk on why we chose that photo.
I choose this image. This image stood out to me because it illustrated perfectly 'a shot of the times.' Two brothers, who usually fight coming together during lockdown and helping one another out. I liked how the image was shot through the door because it seems candid and undisturbing to the brothers activity. The younger brothers agitation coupled with the older brothers concentration marks a time in history where families had to rely on each other that extra bit more.

After this activity, we discussed the Metadata of an image and how to find it. The Metadata refers to data about the image such as the dimensions, the pixels per inch, the copyright owner, keywords, time and date the image was taken, was the flash on etc. Metadata is useful because you can use metadata to help search for images, to protect your ownership rights.
First Conor demonstrated how to find the Metadata function in Lightroom. Then we were introduced to Jeffrey Friedl's image Metadata viewer which is a site that allows you to import a photo and look at the Metadata of it.
After this we were given the task of uploading five images to Lightroom and adding Metadata and then uploading these photos to Jeffrey Friedl's website. Below are my examples:
Overall, I found the class to be very informative. I enjoyed looking at the PPAI award photos because they offered me an understanding on how great photos could still be taken during this time. The Metadata was also very helpful and I know I will use it time and time again to make sure my photos are protected.
